Memorial Junior High ARConnections Makes Learning Come Alive
This year, Memorial Junior High’s ARConnections students didn’t just learn in the classroom—they explored, experimented, and experienced Cleveland in ways that expanded their curiosity and confidence. From riverboats to art galleries, illusion rooms to science labs, students turned the city into a hands-on, interactive learning environment that connected academics, social-emotional learning, and career exploration.
A Citywide Learning Journey
The adventure began aboard the Goodtime III, where students viewed Cleveland from a new vantage point. While cruising the waterfront, they learned how the city’s communities, history, and industries intersect—sparking interest in careers such as engineering, tourism, and urban planning.
At the Cleveland Public Library Main Branch, students explored digital labs, research tools, and career pathways in technology, digital media, and information sciences. They also learned how reading and information support social-emotional growth and even heard directly from the library’s CEO.
Hands-on science took center stage at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Students interacted with fossils, wildlife exhibits, and ecology activities that strengthened problem-solving skills and introduced potential careers in environmental science, biology, and medicine.
The Cleveland Museum of Art opened the door to global cultures and creative expression. Students explored identity, diversity, and design through art, and even engaged in social-emotional learning by examining illusions and perspective-taking.
At the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, students built empathy and global awareness as they learned about animal behavior, conservation, and careers in veterinary medicine and zoology.
The Museum of Illusions pushed students to think in new ways. Mind-bending exhibits helped them explore flexible thinking, perspective, and how perception shapes their interactions with others.
A trip to Amish Country offered a powerful lesson in cultural diversity. Students observed traditions, craftsmanship, and community values, gaining an appreciation for hard work, collaboration, and different ways of life. They explored connections to careers in agriculture, carpentry, culinary arts, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship.
One of the most inspiring stops was NewBridge Cleveland, where students participated in hands-on workshops in digital design, photography, emotional intelligence, and lab technology. Working alongside real healthcare professionals gave them a meaningful look into emerging career pathways. Students also learned about NewBridge’s no-cost post-secondary programs for high school graduates.
Back in the ARConnections classroom, teachers continued the learning with interactive role-play experiences. Students practiced empathy, emotional awareness, and conflict resolution—skills that connected directly to their field trips and strengthened teamwork, communication, and relationship-building.
Memorial’s 7th graders didn’t just explore Cleveland—they discovered how their learning connects to who they are and who they are becoming.
