Acceleration
At South Euclid-Lyndhurst (SEL) Schools, acceleration provides advanced learning opportunities for students who are ready to move beyond their current grade-level content. This intervention is designed to match the curriculum's level and complexity with a student’s academic readiness and ability.
SEL Schools offers several acceleration options, including:
- Early admission to kindergarten
- Individual subject acceleration
- Whole-grade acceleration
- Early high school graduation
One common acceleration pathway is single-subject acceleration in math, beginning as early as Grade 4. Students identified for this path may receive instruction from a gifted intervention specialist. By Grade 8, accelerated math students typically progress to Algebra I, Honors Algebra I, or Honors Geometry.
How is Acceleration Determined?
Acceleration decisions are made collaboratively by a team that evaluates the student’s readiness, motivation, and academic needs. The process includes:
- Assessments and additional data collection
- Observations and test scores
- Input from teachers, parents, and the student
Referrals for acceleration can be initiated by parents or teachers through a request to the Gifted Services Department. The Iowa Acceleration Scale (3rd ed.) is used to guide decisions and ensure appropriate placement.
